Laut dem Bericht von Stem Cell Biotechnology ist das retinale Pigmentepithel (RPE) eine Schicht von Pigmentzellen in der Netzhaut des Auges, die f\u00fcr die Aufrechterhaltung des normalen Sehverm\u00f6gens unerl\u00e4sslich ist. Blindheit aufgrund einer RPE-Dysfunktion, wie beispielsweise Makuladegeneration, beeintr\u00e4chtigt das Sehverm\u00f6gen von sch\u00e4tzungsweise 200 Millionen Menschen weltweit. Forscher vom Institute for Molecular Cell Biology, Singapur, extrahierten in Zusammenarbeit mit der Icahn School of Medicine in New York und der Sulzbach Eye Clinic in Deutschland retinale Stammzellen aus erwachsenen Leichen, die eine unbegrenzte Quelle f\u00fcr Stammzellen darstellen, wandelten sie in retinale Pigmentepithelzellen um und transplantierten sie in die Augen von Affen. Die Ergebnisse zeigten, dass die retinalen Pigmentepithelzellen mindestens drei Monate lang ohne schwerwiegende Nebenwirkungen in den transplantierten Affenaugen verblieben und keine Narbenbildung in der Netzhaut verursachten. Diese Zellen \u00fcbernahmen auch teilweise die Funktion des retinalen Pigmentepithels der Affen und konnten die normale Funktion der Fotorezeptoren unterst\u00fctzen.<\/p>\n

Die Ergebnisse dieser Forschung zeigen, dass es m\u00f6glich ist, aus adulten Netzhautstammzellen gewonnene retinale Pigmentepithelzellen zu verwenden, um die defekte Netzhaut als potenzielle Behandlung f\u00fcr Makuladegeneration zu ersetzen.
